I started rewatching the show this past month from the cancer arc. In some of the episodes he is on, it's completely unnecessary and in the rest he may have a decent scene or two, but they never really do much with him. If I have a problem with season 8, it's mostly the misuse of Duchovny when he is in it. (but those do have some solid monster eps as well, so I'd say definitely continue till the bitter end).
The same unfortunately can't be said for the ones from seasons 9-11. Mythology episodes are difficult for me like I already said, but most of the season 8 ones are at least pretty entertaining. It's good old back to basics, meat and potatoes X-Files we hadn't had in years at that point.

Patrick is very much the shot in the arm the series needed, and I really love the run of solid monster episodes in the first half of the season. I always liked it, and still do with the same caveat that I have for all the seasons after the first movie: the mythology is just an irredeemable mess and I have trouble enjoying even the better mythology episodes that aren't awful in isolation. In a way it's remarkable how good this season is considering how insane what happens to Mulder is. The season overcomes these problems with sheer momentum, and some great acting by Gillian, but they're always there. It's a good, creepy idea for an alien plot (resurrecting the dead, as in the Biblical End Times), and it leads to some great moments ("This Is Not Happening"), but forcing Mulder to rise from the dead always seemed cheesy to me. I also think the idea of having Mulder return as a corpse wasn't entirely successful. The show needed to address why Mulder keeps his brain illness from Scully, needed to address why he kept that tombstone from her (or whether it was an FBI plot to con Scully and so lure him out), needed Mulder's brain illness to be "cured" in a less perfunctory way, and needed to cook up a name better than the corny "supersoldiers". I think the season has some big flaws, though. It was a bit underrated for many years, due to Duchovny's absence, but nowadays it's relatively well regarded. And that final scene of Mulder, Scully and William is just perfect with the s8 Scully music theme … Whilst the finale was a bit too much into the mystical pregnancy trope and left Scully as a damsel in distress, I loved the Skinner/Mulder/Reyes/Doggett team up with Krycek that went wrong (the flow of sending Billy Miles into the garbage truck was amazing ) even though it was all a little bit nonsensical.

Duchovny got to come back full of bitterness and butt heads with Patrick before showing grudging respect. I loved the flashback parts of Per Manum (even if it’s hard to fit into continuity) and The Gift. The way she breaks down at Mulder’s funeral still moves me. As the season went on, I thought they were a great pair although I found it frustrating how frequently they were split up and Scully either worked away, or disappeared and was replaced by Skinner (although with her pregnancy it of course made sense).Īnderson got to show a lot of heartbreak, despair, terror and rage through the season. I loved the shoutouts to Gibson and to the Bounty Hunter, and Scully having to channel Mulder and build up on the changes in her belief from the Sixth Extinction trilogy.
So when he showed up in the s8 start, I was blown away. I knew Duchovny wanted to leave but I didn’t know anything about Patrick joining. I was seriously contemplating not watching s8, and when Mulder was abducted in Requiem, I just rolled my eyes, I assumed it would be resolved quickly like Scully’s abduction. I was growing very tired with X Files at the time, s7 was a very mediocre season with some really weak stories (I’ve learned to like them a bit more on rewatch).
I guess I’m one of the few who saw s8 during original airings and actually liked it immediately.
